Camino de Santiago de Compostela

Camino troops in training

Next September (9/11), a group of my family are doing a few short sections on the Camino (Way) in north Spain as a holiday/bonding experience over a week. We will fly into Bilbao, travel west for a few hours, walk for two days and travel again for c.5 hours over to Lugo to walk into Santiago.

Having watched the movie “The Way” with Martin Sheen, I am excited about the project, which my brother-in-law Cormac and I planned since last year. Getting the advance miles into the legs might prove the hardest part.

I have been been building up my training miles, mostly around Wicklow, averaging about 10/12 miles a week. On Monday 22nd Aug, myself and Cormac, walked a section of the Wicklow Way (Iron bridge near Aughrim to Tinahely) a distance of c.10 miles. It was heavier going than we thought but as the weather was pleasant, we managed OK. I’m not sure how the rest of the gang will fare – roll on the 8th of September – Camino, here we come!
